A conservation awareness “Kakapo Parrot Day” event in Greenwich, Conneticut organised by a local teenager keen to help with the endangered bird’s survival will be held on December 11. Aaron Friedman, a student at Middlebrook School said: “There are only 122 kakapo left. The bird is so rare that it really is important to do something now.” On “Kakapo Parrot Day,” Friedman will be speaking about the bird at the Audubon Center in Greenwich with author Sy Montgomery, who recently wrote a book on the kakapo entitled Kakapo Rescue. Friedman said he feels compelled to get information out about the kakapo to the public. “Someone else is not going to deal with this problem,” he said. “It’s my responsibility to try and help these birds. It might make a difference and at least I’ll know that I tried.”
