Rob McCallum a Big Deal in the Exploration World

As a founding partner of EYOS Expeditions, New Zealander Rob McCallum, since 2008, has helped organise, guide and execute logistics for more than 1000 expeditions to some of the world’s remotest places, Forbes contributor Jim Clash writes.

High-profile projects include James Cameron’s and Victor Vescovo’s dives to Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, the lowest point on Earth more than 10,000m below sea level; visits to dozens of deep shipwrecks, including RMS Titanic and the Bismarck; a circumnavigation of Antarctica in an icebreaker. The list goes on, Clash writes.

In June, McCallum’s company helped locate the deepest shipwreck ever discovered, the “Sammy B” (USS Samuel B Roberts), in nearly 7000m of water.

“I have an early background in managing emergency situations. You learn to not let fear block forward progress. You’re conscious that there’s danger, but mark it down as a risk to be managed rather than something to be feared,” McCallum says.
