Enduring Legacy

This year marks the 96th anniversary of the landings at Gallipoli and to commemorate the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldiers who fell in 1915 the annual Anzac Cove dawn ceremony took place in Turkey. An estimated 6,5 Australians and New Zealanders, many in their 2s and 3s attended. Australian Veterans Affairs Minister Warren Snowdon read out the losses in the eight months following the landing: 25, Ottoman casualties, with 86, killed; 27,7 Australian casualties, with 8,7 killed; 7,5 New Zealand casualties, with 2,7 killed. “The Anzacs could never know the enduring legacy of their deeds of courage, of their service and sacrifice,” Snowdon said. “Their spirit drives us to this day and it behoves us to accept the responsibility to do whatever we can to avoid war and find peaceful resolution to our differences.”
