NEW ZEALAND STANDING FAST IN SOUTHERN OHIO
This is an inspirational story. For a number of years now NZEDGE.COM has supported a high school athletics meeting at South Point High School in Ohio, run by the irrepressible track coach Randy Smith. The connect was our story on Arthur Lydiard, who Randy had met and hosted. Each year Randy creates a part of New Zealand at South Point as an ongoing tribute to New Zealand’s world-changing long distance running coach. Here’s Randy’s report. If anyone can supply Randy with a couple of flags as he has indicated below, pleasecontact me.
“I just wanted to give you an update on how the track meet went. We had 14 boys’ and 14 girls’ teams, so 28 total teams and over 700 athletes. We had the NZ national flag and the silver fern flags flying around the stadium. I am trying to get a couple of Tino Rangatiratanga flags for next year as well. All during the meet, music by anything Finn, (Split Enz, Crowded House, Tim, Neil, Finn Brothers) was playing along with Dave Dobbyn, Bic Runga, the Topp Twins, the Black Seeds, Phoenix Foundation among others. The meet shirts were in red and black to honor Canterbury. We give out special awards in honor of some of Arthur’s runners eg Peter Snell 800, Murray Halberg mile, Barry Magee two mile, Bill Baillie high point award and Dick Tayler most courageous award. Jazz apples, which were developed in New Zealand, were given out to the spectators at the meet, since the kiwifruit are not ready yet.
“John Key sent a welcoming letter that was read to the crowd. All and all we try to give the area a taste of New Zealand in honor of Arthur. The good news is after paying all our expenses, for the meet we are able to send $1,542 dollars to the New Zealand Earthquake Relief Fund. Not bad for a school of only 400 students, located in a high poverty rural area. Thanks again for all your support Brian, it is deeply appreciated, Randy Smith, South Point High School.”
