Induction into Hall of Fame

Three-time Olympic gold medallist Opunake-born Peter Snell will be among the 24 inaugural members of the International Association of Athletics Federation’s (IAAF) Hall of Fame. Snell won the 800m at the 1960 Olympics and – after setting world records in the 800m and the mile in the same week in 1962 – won the 800 and the 1500 double at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. International Athletics Federation president Lamine Diack describes Snell as the “greatest ‘flying Kiwi’ of them all,” and says he “rightfully earned his selection as one of the inaugural members of the IAAF Hall of Fame.” Snell, 73, lives in the United States.
