Giant Impresses

New Zealander Steven Adams, 19, “just may be one of the most intriguing players in college basketball this season, not to mention one of the most physically impressive at 7-foot, 250 pounds,” ESPN senior college basketball writer Andy Katz blogs. Pittsburgh assistant coach Tom Herrion was in New Zealand for only 18 hours when he discovered Adams in a Wellington gym. “It was one of the biggest no-brainers,” said Herrion. “He was physical. He had big shoulders. He had a big frame. It was obviously worth the trip.” Adams has spent the last few months playing summer basketball at the University of Pittsburgh and is now enrolled for autumn, working out with the Panthers and loving the experience of being stateside. In 2011, Adams played basketball for the Wellington Saints in the New Zealand NBL.
