Samoa Backs Tom Groser

Samoa supports New Zealand’s Minister of Trade, Tim Groser as the next World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director General. Deputy Prime Minister Fonotoe Pierre Lauofo gave Samoa’s support at a meeting with Mr Groser, according to the Samoa Observer.  Mr Groser thanked Samoa for its support. “Mr Groser has demonstrated his understanding of the needs of developing countries in the multilateral trading system and our discussions have underlined his strong commitment to engage on issues of interest to the Pacific islands region,” said Mr Fonotoe. “It is very important for development in the region that we have in place leaders in multilateral institutions who are familiar with our concerns.” Mr Groser said that, as Director General, he would look at how the WTO can better meet developing country needs and provide assistance for members who need it most. The Ministers noted New Zealand’s strong links with the Pacific, as well as the special relationship between New Zealand and Samoa underpinned by the Treaty of Friendship.
