Sound Artist Releases Ground of Being

Christchurch-born composer and sound artist Annea Lockwood, who is perhaps best known for her Glass Concerts, in which she made use of the sonic and physical characteristics of glass, as well as her Piano Transplants, will release a new LP on 3 June.

Entitled Ground of Being, this new release gathers four pieces from between 1996 and 2013.

Three are sound pieces, collecting recordings from a variety of sources, and one, “Ear-Walking Woman,” is a composition for prepared piano performed by Lois Svar.

In a 2004 interview with Frank J. Oteri, Lockwood mentions the soundscape and landscape of New Zealand “triggering” some of her work.

“Living within that powerful New Zealand landscape has been the source of my long fascination with environmental forces and their sounds, for sure, though not in any direct, quasi-pictorial way,” Lockwood explained to online magazine I Care If You Listen.

“My River Archive of the ’60s and ’70s came from my love of New Zealand’s wild rivers, my appreciation and experience of their rhythms and power.”

Lockwood studied composition and completed a Bachelor of Music with honours from the University of Canterbury. She lives in the United States.
