Tangiwai Disaster

New Zealanders have being living side by side with volcanoes for hundreds of years but nothing prepared them for the Tangiwai Disaster. In this video, a devastating eruption shakes the people and one unfortunate locomotive on the railway. On Christmas Day 1953, 151 people died in the Tangiwai Disaster, caused by an earlier eruption at Mt Ruapehu.
