Rugby Remembers Anzacs in the True Spirit of Their Sacrifice

The rugby community paid tributes to the Anzacs, who had lost their lives during World War One over the course of the Anzac weekend.

On Friday, April 24 at Waikato Stadium, the Ode was read, The Last Post was sounded, the silence fell, then the Reveille resounded and the 100-strong Haka group for the Chiefs Maori Toa group chanted for the Chiefs.

The other New Zealand and Australian venues of the competition showcased similar ANZAC tributes.

At Christchurch, April 25, fans were invited to lay poppy tributes on the field after the Crusaders-Blues match and there was an Anzac March to the stadium before the Reds-Hurricanes match in Brisbane.

Among the New Zealand Expeditionary Force there was a Maori contingent, which was led into the battle of Sari Bair by Maori All Blacks Pirimi Pererika Tahiwi and Roger Dansey with the Te Rauparaha haka – the same haka the All Blacks have used since 1905.
