Brendon McCullum Wins Halberg Leadership Award
Brendon McCullum has been awarded the Halberg Leadership Award. “As a leader, he has inspired a whole deal of pride in his team and has taken his country to unprecedented heights,” writes Rishad Dsouza for Country Cricket.
“There is a good reason to believe that the Halberg Awards committee made the right call when they bestowed McCullum with the leadership title.”
Richie McCaw told the New Zealand Herald that he admired McCullum’s leadership.
“In the last few years that team has become a real team; bound together, who really want to do well and strive for excellence. They don’t win every time but you can see they are giving absolutely everything – that’s when you start following them. That’s a credit to his leadership and I’ve admired watching what he has done.”
During his tenure, McCullum redefined the very way the game is to be played, hard but fair.
“He changed the way his team played and by way of example showed others in the world how to take the game forward.”
“He showed that a team can play aggressively without ever having to display a glimpse of unfairness,” according to the article.
During the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, New Zealand were perhaps the most aggressive side, without ever being arrogant.
Kane Williamson claimed the award for New Zealand sportsman of the year.
