9 Can’t Miss New Zealand Experiences
New Zealand is known for its beauty and many diverse activities. Jenn Brown shares her personal ‘Can’t Miss Experiences’.
- Bungee Jump in Queenstown
According to Brown, Bungee jumping is the one true way to get the ultimate Kiwi experience. Regardless of whether you choose to jump headfirst down Kawarau Suspension Bridge or the unconventional Shotover Canyon Swing the adrenaline rush will be unlike any other.
- Get Hobbity
You can either do that by visiting Hobbiton on the North Island or with a less-known Hobbit experience. In Glenorchy, just outside of Queenstown you can trace Frodo’s pathways on horseback with the Remarkables Mountain Range as your backdrop.
- Cruise the Majestic Fjords of Milford or Doubtful Sound
If you visit Milford or Doubtful Sound on a good day – “a day when the waterfalls are crashing with fresh rain but the sun is shining and the air is filled with the rainbow mist – you will think you’ve left this planet and found Narnia,” writes Brown.
- Walk on a Glacier
Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, on the West Coast of the South Island, are the most famous of New Zealand’s great frozen fields. You can take helicopter rides, heli-hikes or hike your way up.
- Kayak the Abel Tasman
According to Brown the Abel Tasman National Park at the top of the South Island is easily the most-overlooked jewel of the country. Its blue-green waters remind of tropical beaches and there are plenty of opportunities to kayak, hike, and camp.
- Swim with Dusky Dolphins in Kaikoura
Kaikoura’s Dolphin Encounter is an experience travelers all around the world rave about.
- Take the Ferry from South Island to North Island
Taking the ferry for a 3-hour pleasure cruise from the North Island to the South Island or vice versa is a must when road tripping New Zealand. Both the
Interislander and the Bluebridge Ferry operate out of Wellington on the North and Picton on the South Island.
- White Water Raft Rotorua
For an aquatic adrenaline rush, you have to head to Rotorua. Rotorua is home to several incredible hot springs and the Kaituna River with one the highest commercially-rafted waterfalls in the world.
- Sail the Bay of Islands
“There are dozens of ways to experience the beautiful harbor of the Bay of Islands in the far north of the North Island.” Brown suggests taking the opportunity to learn to sail, charter a yacht, or to take part in an organized tour to discover the many (over 140) islands in the region.
