Claudia Li’s Groundbreaking Florals for Spring

“Looking around her Flatiron District studio, Claudia Li acknowledges the obvious. “It’s like an explosion of floral prints and lots of colors in here,” she says of the space,” writes Véronique Hyland for NY Magazine.

The designer is “banking on full-on romance for spring 2017” with her collection titled After Dusk and Before Dawn, writes Hyland.

“Every season I try to reflect on moments of my life where I feel a mood. This is more about an epiphany of finally setting yourself free. It’s like the first moments where you realize that you can just let go and be free,” said Li.

A recurring motif in her collection is the orchid, “which she calls ‘a symbol of women’s strength and sexuality’.”

Her fashion show’s set was just as botanically themed as the collection with over 10,000 fabric orchids being made to “be papered all over the cubes the models stand on”.

The New Zealand and Singapore native studied painting at Central Saint Martins before pivoting to fashion and heading to Parsons’s MFA program, as reported in the article. After graduating she interned for Brandon Maxwell, who was working full-time as Lady Gaga’s stylist.

Last year Li began showing her namesake label “with a critically well-received debut collection that featured intricately fringed and knotted pieces,” as reported in NY Magazine.
