Dangerous embrace

Auckland musician Zowie (born Zoe Fleury) made the best fashion statement of the day when performing at the opening of New York’s CMJ Music Marathon in October, proclaimed New York Times blogger Jon Pareles. “Zowie top[ped] the groove with a voice that has the quavers of Siouxie Sioux, from Siouxsie and the Banshees, singing (and sometimes rapping) pronunciations like ‘You treat me like I am someone else’ and, even better, ‘I want to destroy you with sound.’ The skintight black leather-looking minidress, black tights and shiny red boots she wore for an afternoon show at Pianos were appropriate, but the accessories were even better: a triangle of chrome at each shoulder, with spikes pointing directly forward. Anything like an embrace would be dangerous.”
